Edgerunners Creator Calls Season 1 Ending a Happy One Ahead of Season 2

Bartosz Sztybor says the story could have ended much worse, as the new season with a fresh cast arrives on October 20.

The creator of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Bartosz Sztybor, said in an interview that the ending of the anime's first season is a happy ending, according to gamesradar.com. He argued the story could have ended much worse, and that some of its characters are tragic figures for whom a different outcome was impossible.

The second season arrives on October 20 with a new cast rather than a continuation of the first season's crew. The lineup includes Weak Kingsley, a nomad named D., the chrome-infused Talia and Roman, described as a child who wants to film on the streets of Night City.

Sztybor said his worldview did not change significantly before writing season 2, suggesting the new episodes keep the same outlook as the first.

What happened in season 1

In the first season, most of Maine's crew die, including Maine himself. Rebecca is killed by Adam Smasher, and protagonist David is killed by Arasaka's heavy after buying time for two crew members, Lucy among them, to flee.

Sztybor had previously commented on an alternate fate in which David would have become an unwitting tool for Arasaka, an outcome the aired ending avoided.
