Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames was previewed at Lucca Comics and Games ahead of its theatrical release in Italy, according to Variety. Director Naoya Andô and producer Ryo Nakamuray discussed the film at the event.

The film is the fourth cinema outing for the Gintama series. It is animated in 3D and framed in the CinemaScope ultrawide ratio.

In this version, the town of Yoshiwara is shown burning, a departure from the TV series arc of the same name. A revised cut of the film with over a hundred changed shots was released in September.

An international production

The end titles list studios from China, Indonesia and Vietnam, among others.

Gintama began as a manga by Hideaki Sorachi, set in a sci-fi version of late-Edo-period Tokyo invaded by the alien Amanto. The manga became a 367-episode anime series and has had three previous big-screen spin-offs, while the Yoshiwara in Flames arc was previously told in the TV series. A version of the film was released in Japan in February.
