HBO Max Brings Back 'Calcifer's Yule Log' on November 1, 2026
The 30-minute ambient video loops Calcifer, the fire demon from Howl's Moving Castle, with sound effects from the Studio Ghibli film.
HBO Max will make the 30-minute ambient video "Calcifer's Yule Log" available to subscribers starting November 1, 2026, according to Warner Bros. Discovery Press. The revival is part of the platform's November 2026 release slate.
The video shows Calcifer, the fire demon from Howl's Moving Castle, burning in his hearth with looping sound effects taken from the film.
Howl's Moving Castle was released in 2004, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and loosely based on Diana Wynne Jones' 1986 novel of the same name. Chieko Baisho voiced Sophie and Takuya Kimura voiced Howl.
"Calcifer's Yule Log" first debuted on the platform in December 2021. HBO Max's library also includes ambient videos "World of Westeros" and "A Night in the Seven Kingdoms," both based on Game of Thrones.
Studio Ghibli's presence extends beyond streaming: Ghibli Park in Nakagute, Japan, features Howl's Moving Castle exhibits, including a recreation of Sophie's hat shop and a life-size castle replica about 52 feet tall in its "Valley of Witches" region, which also hosts attractions based on Kiki's Delivery Service and Earwig and the Witch. Howl's castle appears in the anime short A Night in the Valley of Witches, co-directed by Goro Miyazaki and Akihiko Yamashita.
