Look Back Anime Film Wins Kineko Grand Prix Teens Feature Award

The Kineko International Film Festival in Tokyo gave its Teens Feature prize to the Tatsuki Fujimoto adaptation, with judges aged 13 to 18 choosing the winner.

The anime film of Tatsuki Fujimoto's Look Back one-shot manga won the Kineko Grand Prix Teens Feature award at the Kineko International Film Festival in Tokyo, according to Anime News Network. The prize was given on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

The Teens Feature category covers Japanese and foreign films aimed at viewers aged 13 to 18, and the winner is decided by judges of the same age group.

The adaptation has a history at the Japanese box office: when it opened in theaters in Japan in June 2024, it ranked #2 in ticket sales but #1 in weekend earnings. Over its first three days it sold 135,000 tickets and earned 227 million yen (about US$1.40 million).

In October 2024, GKIDS screened the anime film in North America, where it earned US$688,253 at the U.S. box office in its opening weekend.

Fujimoto debuted the Look Back one-shot on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ in July 2021, and it drew over 2.5 million views on its first day. Viz Media and MANGA Plus launched the manga digitally in English, and Viz Media published it in print in September 2022.

The manga also inspired a live-action film directed, edited and written by Hirokazu Kore-eda, which opened in Japan on September 11. GKIDS will release it in U.S., Canadian, U.K. and Irish theaters, with select North American screenings on December 30 followed by a wider release on January 15.
