Naruto: Shadow Rising Manga Announced at NYCC for 2027

A new canon Naruto manga was revealed at New York Comic Con, set between the original series and Boruto, with a 2027 release planned.

A new canon manga titled Naruto: Shadow Rising was announced on October 10 at New York Comic Con, with a release planned for sometime in 2027. The reveal was made by Naruto's original author and illustrator.

The new manga is set between the end of Naruto and the start of Boruto. A Kickstarter for Naruto: Shadow Rising has also been launched, and promotional art for the manga features the character Sarada as a baby.

The announcement prompted renewed debate over Boruto's place in the franchise. A viral post on X dated October 14, which has accumulated almost 5 million views, claimed that Masashi Kishimoto said in a 2024 interview that Boruto is an alternate universe. The claim circulated alongside a Boruto Canonicity Megathread posted on the r/Boruto subreddit, Kotaku reported.

Content creator Naruto Explained debunked the rumor, and fans compared the situation to Dragon Ball GT, a non-canon entry in the Dragon Ball franchise.

Background

As of October 2025, publisher Shueisha confirmed that the Boruto manga had 10 million copies in total circulation in Japan. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations' manga sales began in 2016. As of 2023, the first 72 Naruto books had sold over a combined 250 million copies worldwide. Naruto's official American publisher is Viz Media.
