Tetsuya Chiba's Hinemosu Notari Nikki Manga Goes on Hiatus Due to Poor Health

Tetsuya Chiba's autobiographical essay manga Hinemosu Notari Nikki is going on hiatus due to the creator's poor health. The hiatus was announced in the 19th issue of Shogakukan's Big Comic magazine.

The editorial department stated it will prioritize Chiba's health and recovery. Chiba himself said the severe summer heat might be the cause of his illness.

Chiba launched Hinemosu Notari Nikki in Big Comic in December 2015. The manga's first compiled volume was published in 2018, and the seventh volume in November 2025. The manga previously went on hiatus in August 2024 and resumed in December 2024.

Chiba debuted as a manga creator in 1956 and is best known for the boxing manga Ashita no Joe, which ran from 1968 to 1973. The series inspired two television anime in 1970 and 1980 and two anime films in 1980 and 1981. Megalo Box, a re-imagining of Ashita no Joe, aired in 2018, and its sequel Megalo Box 2: Nomad premiered in April 2021. Ashita no Joe received its first official English release as Ashita no Joe: Fighting for Tomorrow in December 2024.

Chiba was nominated to the Japan Art Academy in 2022 and is the chair of the Japan Cartoonists Association. He received the Order of Culture award in 2024, the first manga creator to do so. He is 87 years old and had heart surgery in January 2022. In 2021, he revealed he was treated for a tumor in his throat.
