Kouhei Azano began the series under Fujimi Fantasia Bunko in May 2010. Kadokawa published the 17th volume in March 2025. As of September 2023, the series had 1 million copies in circulation.
The series went on hiatus for over six years after the 16th volume released in October 2018. A side-story series, Tokyo Ravens EX, ran from July 2013 to August 2016 with four volumes.
A manga adaptation by Atsushi Suzumi ran in Shounen Ace from April 2010 to July 2017, with the final volume published in September 2017. Several other manga adaptations were also released. The first 11 volumes of the main manga were published digitally in English by Kadokawa via BookWalker between October 2014 and June 2015, and Yen Press later acquired the digital license.
The series ranked 7th in the tankobon division of Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! in 2014 and 10th in the light novel category of the 2014 Denshi Shoseki Award. An anime adaptation by 8bit aired from October 2013 to March 2014, and Funimation streamed and released it in North America.
