Yamato Tops Sci-Fi Anime Poll, Gundam Ties Fourth
Space Battleship Yamato won an Anime!Anime! fan poll with 37% of votes, while Mobile Suit Gundam tied for fourth despite new projects.
Space Battleship Yamato has been voted the favorite sci-fi anime in a poll conducted by Anime!Anime!. The classic series, which first aired in 1974, took first place with 37 percent of the 230 votes cast.
Its modern remake, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, ranked second, while Legend of the Galactic Heroes placed third. Mobile Suit Gundam tied for fourth place.
Despite the poll result, the Gundam franchise remains a commercial powerhouse. Since 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam has earned over US$26 billion in lifetime revenue.
Several Gundam projects are currently in development. Bandai Namco is set to launch Mobile Suit Gundam RG: XARX-ZERO in 2027, directed by Kenji Kamiyama. A new animation project for Gundam Wing has also been announced, and production is underway for the final installment of the Hathaway trilogy.
Additionally, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is a narrative prequel to the recent SEED theatrical release. A Hollywood live-action Gundam adaptation is in the works with Sidney Sweeney attached.
