Report: Activision Proposes Full Halo Reboot

Activision reportedly proposes a total Halo reboot, with Sledgehammer Games prototyping a free-to-play multiplayer game and a story campaign.

Activision has reportedly proposed a total reboot for the Halo series, according to a report from Rebs Gaming. As part of the proposal, Sledgehammer Games presented conceptual prototypes for a free-to-play multiplayer Halo game and a story campaign built in the Infinity Ward engine.

Sledgehammer Games is believed to be leading development of the next Halo game. The original project ideas for a full Halo game were discarded, and plans are changing. A sequel to Halo Infinite is unlikely, and at least some of Halo's story will be rebooted.

Background

Halo has a new home at Activision following recent changes at Xbox. The franchise was originally developed by Bungie before being handed over to 343 Industries, now known as Halo Studios.

The series has faced narrative challenges in the past. Halo 4 required outside reading to understand Forerunner history, while Halo 5 required outside reading to understand the appearance of Blue Team. Later Halo games jettisoned major villains like the Didact and Jul 'Mdama, resulting in messy lore with abrupt resets.
