Atari to shut down VCS software store on February 1, 2027

Atari has stopped onboarding new games for the VCS; existing purchases stay playable offline after the store closes.

Atari has stopped accepting new games for the Atari VCS and will shut down the console's software store on February 1, 2027, the company announced. Games can still be bought on the storefront through January 31, 2027.

After the shutdown, the VCS will no longer receive firmware updates. Titles users already own will remain playable offline, and an upcoming OS update will let owners run their retro games without relying on Atari's infrastructure.

Atari also plans to release its Home Brew app on all VCS devices so owners can add new games independently, and said it will publish guides in the coming weeks to help users migrate their games. Additional support is available through the company's Discord servers, according to gamerant.com.

From 2021 hybrid to end of support

The VCS launched in 2021 as a PC-console hybrid priced at $399.99, marketed as a modernized take on the Atari 2600, originally called the Video Computer System. Some observers believed the device contributed to Atari's major financial losses in 2021 and 2022, according to Time Extension.

Atari has said it turned what was planned as a one-off Kickstarter program into a platform it has supported since 2020.
