Capcom confirms Capcom ID breach affecting 11.7 million users

The publisher says passwords were changed without authorization on 196 accounts and blocked the intrusion after spotting it on October 19.

Capcom has confirmed a data breach of its Capcom ID account service that affected more than 11.7 million users, according to Engadget. The service underpins online play in titles including Street Fighter 6.

The breach included millions of account email addresses, Capcom said. The birth dates, genders, countries or regions and nicknames of 43 accounts were exposed, and the passwords of 196 accounts were changed without authorization.

Capcom said customer credit card information was not included in the breach. It detected suspicious activity indicating potential unauthorized access to Capcom ID on October 19, blocked the access immediately, investigated the cause and scope, and reported the incident to local police and its external advisory board for security oversight.

The company said it identified and addressed the attack method, and that services using Capcom ID, including online play in Street Fighter 6, remain available. It warned users to be wary of suspicious emails impersonating the company.

The incident follows other breaches in the games industry: in April, Rockstar Games confirmed it had been hit by a third-party data breach.
