Modder Runs Doom on 1982 Vectrex Console via New Cartridge

Jason Kopp's demo uses the Ultimate Vectrex Multicart 2, which handles processing while the console's CRT displays vector graphics.

Modder Jason Kopp, known as ArcadeJason, has released a Doom demo that runs on the Vectrex console, using his Ultimate Vectrex Multicart 2 (UVMC2) cartridge, according to Engadget.

The UVMC2 cartridge acts as a small plug-in PC, handling the processing while the Vectrex's built-in CRT screen is used for display. Audio from the demo comes through a separate 3.5mm output on the cartridge.

The project also relies on an SDK created by modder Daniel Ferrer Guerrero. The Vectrex version renders Doom with vector graphics, giving it a Tron-like appearance.

An unusual target for a familiar port

Doom was originally released in 1993, and the Vectrex arrived in 1982 as the only vector-based home console ever released. The game has previously been ported to devices including iPods, graphing calculators and toasters.
