EA puts 25 classic games on Steam and GOG, seven remastered
The lineup includes most of the Ultima series and several Wing Commander titles, with anniversary edition labels on the remastered releases.
EA has released 25 classic games on Steam and GOG, lightly remastered or re-released, according to Ars Technica. The lineup includes several Wing Commander titles and nearly the entire Ultima series.
Seven titles received remasters: Wing Commander I through IV and Prophecy, Privateer 2: The Darkening, and Road Rash. The remastered Wing Commander and Road Rash releases carry anniversary edition labels.
EA senior producer Jim Vessella published a lengthy blog post this week describing the remastering effort. His team cataloged an archive room at EA's Redwood Shores campus containing old, poorly labeled physical media.
The archive held nearly all original masters of the Wing Commander III and IV full-motion-video cutscenes. Contractors digitized and labeled the footage on swing shifts, and community member Matt Wells, who made Wing Commander enhancement patches, helped with the remasters.
Earlier remaster work
In 2019, Vessella worked on the Command & Conquer: Remastered Collection.
