EA shuts down BioWare and cancels new Mass Effect game

EA keeps the Mass Effect IP, and any future game in the series would be made by a different studio, according to GameRant.

Electronic Arts has shut down BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and canceled the new Mass Effect game that was in development there, according to GameRant.

EA retains ownership of the Mass Effect IP, and any future game in the series would be produced by another studio rather than by the team that was working on it at BioWare.

A Mass Effect television series for Amazon Prime Video telling an original story was previously in the works. No update on its status has been announced.

Years of mixed results

The closure follows a run of uneven releases for the Edmonton-founded studio. Mass Effect: Andromeda drew a more mixed response than the original trilogy, and Anthem, launched in 2019, flopped and was eventually shut down. Mass Effect Legendary Edition arrived in 2021 and was well-received.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released in 2024, did not meet EA's sales expectations. A brief teaser for the new Mass Effect had shown Liara finding a piece of the Normandy ship.

Some former BioWare developers now work at Archetype Entertainment, the studio behind the 2027 action-RPG Exodus.
