EMIKA_GAMES retires, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING GOOD is final game
The studio said its ninth game, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING GOOD, will be its last and that it has no plans for new projects, citing disappointing results and years of pressure.
EMIKA_GAMES has announced its retirement from game development after about seven years of activity, according to gamespark.jp. The studio said its ninth game, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING GOOD, will be its last and that it has no plans for new projects.
In its statement, the developer cited disappointing results for its two most recent games as a reason for retiring. It also pointed to seven years of criticism, hatred, attacks from other developers and constant pressure that drained its creative energy and motivation.
The studio said its feelings about game development have changed and that it cannot currently imagine making another game. The statement ended with thanks to fans who supported the studio for years.
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING GOOD is available on Steam and itch.io. At the time of writing, Steam reviews for the game stood at 79% positive out of 91 reviews, a “Mostly Positive” rating.
Earlier break in 2021
On 22 July 2021, EMIKA_GAMES released the horror game Summer of '58 on Steam. At that time the developer also stepped away from development, citing financial trouble caused by Steam's refund system: the roughly 90-minute game was built to be finished in one sitting, but Steam allows refunds within two weeks and under two hours of play, so many refunds were accepted despite a “Very Positive” rating, leaving the one-person studio without funds for its next game and forcing an indefinite break.
