Epic Games Store rebuilt client adds Linux and tightens Steam race

Epic released a preview Epic Games Store client for Windows, macOS and Linux, with the rebuilt launcher claiming faster startup than Steam.

Epic Games has released a rebuilt preview client for the Epic Games Store on Windows, macOS and Linux. According to pcgamer.com, the release marks the first time the storefront has offered a Linux build. The preview is being treated as a beta and can be downloaded at launcher.epicgames.com.

Epic claims the rebuilt launcher halves startup time and reaches the store page 46% faster than Steam from a cold start. The company says the technical improvements were verified by an external vendor. The library view has also been redesigned and can include shortcuts to games installed through Steam and other clients.

Epic described the new client as "vibe coded" in a blog post. Martin Keely, Epic Games Store general manager, said the store and launcher shell use a completely new architecture written with AI coding tools.

Alongside the client, Epic announced it is upgrading Easy Anti-Cheat to bring Fortnite to Linux and to help other multiplayer games do the same.

Background

Epic had teased a major Epic Games Store rebuild earlier in 2026. Keely took over as general manager in August 2026, replacing Steve Allison. In an October 2025 shift reported by Bloomberg, Epic told the team on an unannounced Star Wars and Marvel shooter to take an "AI first" approach, and CEO Tim Sweeney said the company has a huge pivot underway as developers retool for AI acceleration.
