Esports World Cup opens 2027 qualifiers to outside tournaments
Organisers aim for more than 400 tournaments and 1.8 million players in 2027, with applications open until December 20, 2026.
The Esports Foundation announced the EWC Qualifier Program for the 2027 Esports World Cup on October 20, 2026, a system that lets existing and regional tournaments around the world become official qualifiers. According to inside-games.jp, the Road to EWC network is targeting more than 400 tournaments and 1.8 million participating players in 2027.
The program runs on two routes. EWC Direct Qualifiers bring established esports tournaments into the official qualification path for the EWC main event, while organisers keep their own event brand. EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers are open to applications from regional organisers, associations, internet cafes, universities, esports facilities and game festivals.
Winners of a Satellite LCQ are guaranteed a place in the EWC Last Chance Qualifier the following summer, with support for accommodation and visas. The Esports Foundation also provides marketing support for Satellite LCQ events.
The initial Satellite LCQ titles are Chess, Counter-Strike 2, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves and Street Fighter 6.
Applications for the 2027 program close on December 20, 2026, and approved events must finish by June 1, 2027.
The Last Chance Qualifier route has already produced a champion: in 2024, player jafonsogv advanced through the EA SPORTS FC Last Chance Qualifier and went on to win the EWC, and the Jafonso Award was created in honour of that achievement.
