Game of Thrones RTS Adds Ice Spiders, Sets Early 2027 Release

PlaySide Studios' Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will include ice spiders as a White Walker unit. The RTS launches in early 2027.

PlaySide Studios has confirmed that its real-time strategy game Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will feature ice spiders as a unit within the White Walker faction. The creatures can be seen hidden in the background of the faction's army in the game's first gameplay trailer.

Game director Ryan McMahon noted that the ice spiders were only ever mentioned in tales by Old Nan in season 1 of the HBO series and never appeared on screen. Bringing them into the game gives players a unit that the show never visualized.

The game is set to release in early 2027. No specific date has been announced.

Rooted in the HBO series

PlaySide based Game of Thrones: War for Westeros on the hit HBO series, using the likenesses of actors such as Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kit Harington, and Emilia Clarke for hero units. Polygon reported the ice spider detail and McMahon's comments.

The studio's first game, 2021's Age of Darkness: Final Stand, was heavily inspired by the Game of Thrones franchise, making this project a return to familiar territory for the developer.
