Garry Newman Vows to Drop s&box Citizen Model, Rework Playfund

Facepunch will replace the citizen character model within a month and switch maps and games to a Workshop subscribe/install model, Newman said.

Garry Newman has publicly responded to criticism of s&box, saying Facepunch will remove the "citizen" player character model and switch to human characters over the next month or so, according to pcgamer.com.

Writing in a lengthy YouTube comment under Eridium's video "S&box's Free To Play Weekend Isn't Enough," Newman also said Facepunch will change Playfund so it stops incentivising low-quality content, and will move maps and games to a Workshop subscribe/install model.

Newman acknowledged that the s&box launch and its free weekend were poorly received and damaged relations with the Garry's Mod community.

He added that Facepunch had considered hiring Eridium but decided he is more useful as an independent.

Five months on the market

s&box is a user-generated content platform from Facepunch positioned as a successor to Garry's Mod, and it has struggled in its first five months on the market. In an earlier interview, Newman downplayed the problem of low-quality AI-generated games flooding the platform.
