Rockstar Tried to Replace Grand Theft Auto 6 Weapon Wheel

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reports Rockstar tested a weapon tray and weapon web before returning to the weapon wheel in Grand Theft Auto 6.

Rockstar Games spent months, and possibly years, trying to replace the weapon wheel in Grand Theft Auto 6 before bringing the system back for the final game, according to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier.

Schreier reported that the studio tested alternative interfaces, including a weapon tray and a weapon web, before abandoning both. The released design uses a weapon wheel again.

The reporting is based on a visit to Rockstar North, where Schreier spoke with developers who have worked on the game for more than a decade. According to his account, Rockstar struggled to establish a clear direction for Grand Theft Auto 6 between 2019 and 2022.

Rockstar's design aims to balance the weapon-carrying limits of Red Dead Redemption 2 with the arcade-style action of the Grand Theft Auto series. Grand Theft Auto 5, by contrast, gave players access to a large arsenal through a traditional weapon wheel.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026.
