11 of 16 GTA Games Are Unplayable on PS5

Grand Theft Auto 4 cannot be played on PlayStation 5. Neither can its expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. The original Grand Theft Auto, GTA 2, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, Grand Theft Auto Advance, and Chinatown Wars are also unavailable on Sony's current console.

In total, 11 of the 16 GTA games, including major expansions, are inaccessible on PS5. Only GTA 5, GTA Online, GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas remain available on current-generation hardware. The 2D GTA games are no longer officially available anywhere, though Liberty City Stories and Chinatown Wars can still be played on mobile phones.

GTA 4 and its expansions remain available on PC and Xbox. The series' release history is heavily skewed toward its early years: 14 GTA releases came in the first 12 years, while only two have arrived in the 17 years since, with a third soon to come.

Other major franchises have done better at keeping their back catalogs playable. Only six of the 21 mainline Zelda games are unavailable on Switch 2, and of the 16 numbered Final Fantasy games, only two cannot be played on PS5. Bethesda released a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in 2025, and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, a 2021 outsourced collection, brought three classic GTA titles to modern platforms.

As reported by Polygon, the gaps in GTA's availability stand out against those efforts, leaving a large portion of the series' history stranded on older hardware.
