Japan's No-Code RPG Tool Makers Compare Notes at Roundtable

AUTOMATON gathered the teams behind RPG Tsukuru U2U, WOLF RPG Editor, RPG Developer Bakin and SRPG Studio to discuss how each tool was built.

AUTOMATON has published a roundtable discussion bringing together the developers of four of Japan's best-known no-code game creation tools: RPG Tsukuru U2U, WOLF RPG Editor, RPG Developer Bakin and SRPG Studio.

Hiroyuki Ichinose, producer of RPG Tsukuru U2U at Gotcha Gotcha Games, said the tool is the first PC entry in the RPG Tsukuru series to incorporate 3D, and that it is currently in development. RPG Tsukuru itself dates back to 1992.

Nobuki Nagai, team leader of RPG Developer Bakin at SmileBoom, said the tool entered early access in October 2022 and received its official release in August of last year. SmokingWOLF, developer of WOLF RPG Editor, said work on that tool began around 2006.

Sapphire Soft, the developer of SRPG Studio, said the tool was created to fill a gap, as few SRPG-specific creation tools existed at the time. Simulation RPG Tsukuru 95 was the last notable one before it.

The roundtable also touched on the makers' own histories: Ichinose's first involvement in game development was the 1995 Enix title Mystic Ark, which arrived around the same period as RPG Tsukuru SUPER DANTE.
