Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Set Gets New Mechanics Before November 13 Launch
Wizards of the Coast detailed Beam Me Up, Face a Dilemma, Assimilate and Spacecraft, plus card art spanning the 1960s series to Strange New Worlds.
Wizards of the Coast has revealed new mechanics and card art for Magic: The Gathering's Star Trek Universes Beyond set, which launches on November 13, according to Kotaku. The set marks Star Trek's 60th anniversary.
The mechanics include Beam Me Up, Face a Dilemma, Assimilate, Federation, Strange New Worlds, and Spacecraft and Station. Beam Me Up lets players return a creature to hand in order to cast instant and sorcery cards from the graveyard, while Assimilate lets players take control of opponents' creatures.
Face a Dilemma is a modal choice mechanic that triggers certain cards' abilities. The Kobayashi Maru Scenario enchantment offers the options Hail, Sensors, Transport and Abandon Ship. Federation rewards having non-Borg creatures in play, and Strange New Worlds scales with the number of differently named lands in play.
Spacecraft begin as artifacts and convert into artifact creatures by stationing creatures on them. The thresholds differ: U.S.S. Discovery requires 6 or more, while Borg Cube requires 12 or more.
The set draws characters and art from Star Trek incarnations ranging from the 1960s original series through Strange New Worlds, and includes a card dedicated to Data's cat, Spot. Some extremely rare cards in the set are signed by the actors depicted.
