Modern Warfare 4 Narrative Director Cites Sicario as Key Influence

Infinity Ward's Jeff Negus said Sicario shapes the game's tone, with John Wick, Black Hawk Down and Zero Dark Thirty also informing the story.

Infinity Ward narrative director Jeff Negus has named Sicario as a key cinematic reference for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with John Wick, Black Hawk Down and Zero Dark Thirty also informing the game's tone. The comments were reported by gamesradar.com ahead of Modern Warfare 4's launch on October 23, 2026.

Negus described Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, as a film he always checks his work against for tone and feel. He added that Black Hawk Down and Zero Dark Thirty were among the more military films the team drew on, while John Wick has what he called an obvious presence in Modern Warfare 4.

The game's story follows South Korea defending itself against forces from North Korea.

Cinematic touchstones

Sicario, released in 2015, follows an FBI agent drawn into a covert operation against a Mexican cartel. Black Hawk Down and Zero Dark Thirty are both based on real military operations. The John Wick series is known for stylised close-quarters action.
