Netflix memo: only 3.5% of subscribers play games monthly

The figure puts Netflix 10% behind its 2026 gaming target, per a memo seen by The Wall Street Journal, days before earnings.

Only 3.5% of Netflix subscribers play games on the service each month, according to a company memo seen by The Wall Street Journal. The figure leaves Netflix 10% short of its 2026 target for games reach and engagement.

The report lands ahead of Netflix's earnings call on October 20, 2026, and follows a week in which several top executives were let go or left the company. Netflix stock is down 23% this year and 43% over the past 12 months.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has not commented on the memo's figures. The company has not published monthly gaming engagement numbers of its own.

From AAA ambitions to mobile

The 3.5% figure is an improvement on earlier years: in 2022, it was reported that fewer than 1% of Netflix subscribers played games on the platform. Netflix at one point planned to build AAA games and hired big-name talent for the effort, but later backtracked and now focuses on mobile and social games.

The company has kept using game content to drive sign-ups, recently hosting the Grand Theft Auto 6 Extended Look trailer. It previously worked with Take-Two to bring GTA games to the platform, and Red Dead Redemption remains available on Netflix.

Netflix recently laid off more than 1,000 people, about 6% of its workforce, its largest round of layoffs to date.
