Overwatch Season 5 Adds Support Hero Doctrine and Escort Map Grimsvotn

Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2026 that Overwatch Season 5 introduces Doctrine, the Icelandic prison map Grimsvotn, and role changes for Sombra and Roadhog.

Blizzard Entertainment announced at BlizzCon 2026 that Overwatch Season 5 will add a new support hero, Doctrine, alongside the escort map Grimsvotn and reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, according to CNET.

Doctrine is a vampiric villain whose alternate fire boosts his other abilities. His ultimate, Deliverance, sends out bat-like drones that grant allies overhealth while reducing opponents' maximum life for several seconds. The new map, Grimsvotn, is an Icelandic prison setting from which Doctrine escaped.

Sombra moves from the damage role to the support role in Season 5. Her reworked abilities let her heal allies and reduce enemy damage output, while she keeps her translocator and EMP ultimate.

Roadhog remains in the tank role with a rework that reduces his chain hook pull distance and replaces his instant combo. He also gains a new ability called Trash Compactor.

Season 5 in the wider arc

Blizzard had said in February that Overwatch was kicking off its 10th anniversary by adding 10 new heroes during the year, more than triple the average additions in previous years, and that Season 5 is the penultimate chapter in the game's year-long story arc described in its season preview blog.
