Sombra Leaves Damage Role in Overwatch Season 5 Support Rework

Blizzard's season 5 update, due October 6, also reworks Roadhog and adds a new support hero, Doctrine.

Blizzard Entertainment will move Sombra out of the damage role and into the support role as part of Overwatch season 5, the company has announced. The rework goes live on October 6, alongside a separate hero rework for Roadhog and the debut of a new support hero, Doctrine. The details were reported by Polygon.

Sombra's new kit includes Hot Fix, a secondary fire that heals teammates for a large amount over a 12-second period. The change places a hero long known for disruption and flanking into a healing slot, and arrives in the same update that adds Doctrine to the support roster.

According to associate game director Alec Dawson, speaking at BlizzCon 2026, Sombra has been one of Overwatch's most challenging reworks. Blizzard initially did not set out to make her a support hero; earlier versions of the rework kept her in the DPS category. The final decision reverses that approach.

The shift has drawn pushback from some Sombra mains who have expressed unhappiness about the character becoming a healer. Both the Sombra and Roadhog reworks, plus Doctrine, launch together on October 6.
