Leaker: PlayStation 6 RAM and Storage Alone Top $680
A NeoGAF post claims the console's memory and SSD push its expected price above $1000, with GDDR7 now costing roughly $20 to $23 per GB.
A leaker posting under the handle KeplerL2 claimed on the NeoGAF forum that the RAM and NAND storage in the PlayStation 6 alone cost more than $680, according to wccftech.com. That figure covers components only, before the processor, cooling, chassis or assembly are counted.
The same claim puts the console's expected price above $1000 once component costs are added up. Sony has not commented on the figure.
The leaker tied the estimate to memory pricing: GDDR7 now costs roughly $20 to $23 per GB, against a projected $3 per GB when console SoC design began.
Timing unchanged, for now
Sony is reportedly still targeting a late 2027 release for the PlayStation 6. In the past, a 40GB RAM and 1TB storage configuration for the console was heavily rumored.
Component pricing has become a planning factor across the industry: Valve's Steam Machine launched amid market conditions that make launching a new gaming system challenging. Microsoft's next-generation console, Xbox Project Helix, is in the same cost environment.
Separately, Sony plans to sunset disc production starting in early 2028.
