Pokémon BugLime ROM Hack Puts Bug Types First

The Pokémon FireRed-based fan game features 94 bug-type monsters, insect starters and unlimited TMs, according to Polygon.

Pokémon BugLime, a ROM hack built on Pokémon FireRed that rebuilds the game around bug-type monsters, has been released, according to Polygon. The project comes from creator spearmintz.

The game focuses entirely on bug types, with insect starters: Tarountula, Surskit and Sizzlipede. In total, 94 bug-type monsters from the series appear, and several others are reclassified as bug types for the hack.

Returning bug types have been reworked rather than left as they were. Their stats, movesets, elemental combinations and evolution methods have all been rebalanced, and every NPC and gym leader in the game now uses bug-type Pokémon. The gym leaders keep a technical link to their original elemental focus through dual typing.

Newer-generation mechanics added

The hack also brings in systems from later entries in the series, including shiny charms. TMs are unlimited and HMs can be deleted, and the Experience Share item can be picked up midway through the game.

spearmintz said the objective was to make all bug types fun to use rather than realistic.
