SAGA Barcelona Game Fest Debut Draws 21,200 Visitors
Japan was the guest country at the first edition of the merged Barcelona event, which showed about 300 playable games alongside a Steam online festival.
The first SAGA Barcelona Game Fest 2026 was held from October 9 to 11, 2026, at Fira de Barcelona's Montjuïc site, drawing 21,200 visitors, according to 4gamer.net. The figure is up from the 16,000 who attended the previous year's event.
The edition was the first under the SAGA Barcelona Game Fest name, created by merging several events, and Japan was selected as the guest country. About 300 playable games were shown, with 29 publishing companies and roughly 160 studios or individuals taking part. An online festival on Steam brought the total number of games exhibited to more than 200.
Japanese participants shared a booth under the GAMES FROM JAPAN banner: Marvelous' iGi indie incubation program and IP360/SO-FU, a program backed by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Organizer Daniel Santigosa, the event's operations representative, said the goal is for the festival to become the largest gathering of its kind in Southern Europe. The IndieDevDay Awards handed out seven indie awards and three academic awards.
Longer roots behind the merger
The event's components have a longer history. Catalonia- and Barcelona-backed incubation program GameBCN began operating in 2014 and has run for 12 years, while Santigosa started the IndieDevDay event for local indie developers in 2018. Marvelous launched iGi, Japan's first incubation program of its kind, in 2021. Last year the gathering was held as BCN Game Fest and drew 16,000 visitors.
