Sony: pre-2028 physical PS games stay orderable after disc cutoff
Sony told publishers and retailers that PS5 games released before January 2028 can still be reordered after it stops making discs for new releases.
Sony has moved to reassure publishers and retailers that physical PlayStation games will still be sold in stores after January 2028, according to Game File. The clarification sets out how the platform holder's disc policy will work once it stops producing discs for new PS5 releases.
Under the policy, PlayStation will no longer make discs for new PS5 games released after January 2028. Sony will, however, keep accepting orders for existing physical games released before that date, along with new non-disc products.
Games released before January 2028 are not affected, including PS5 titles launching in 2027 such as Until Dawn 2 and God of War Laufey. Retailers will still be able to reorder those titles after the deadline.
PlayStation had previously announced that it would stop producing disc editions of new PS5 games released after January 2028. Brick-and-mortar chains such as GameStop were among the first businesses hurt by the industry's shift toward digital games.
PlayStation has also described digital ownership as "impossible" and has removed digital items from the PlayStation Store and from owners' digital libraries.
