Space Engineers 2 adds hostile NPCs in Hostile Encounters update

Keen Software House's new update introduces Renegades and Boatmen enemies, plus improved combat AI, a damage indicator and a dynamic crosshair.

Keen Software House released the "Hostile Encounters" update for Space Engineers 2 on October 20, 2026, according to GameSpark. The update adds hostile NPCs and expanded combat systems to the early-access space sandbox game.

Two types of hostile NPCs were added: Renegades and Boatmen. The developer describes the Renegades as outlaws and pirates operating in Varduere. The Boatmen are currently set as stronger leader-type enemies among the Renegades.

The NPCs can enter player-built structures, opening doors and avoiding obstacles as they move. In combat, they hide behind cover and relocate to another safe spot when their cover is destroyed. They also share information about allies and threats and act according to their surroundings.

Combat systems were strengthened with moving fire, retreat decisions based on the situation, behavior changes when damaged, and variant-dependent shooting accuracy. The update also adds a damage indicator that shows attack direction and strength, with screen saturation and shake effects depending on the damage taken. A dynamic crosshair now displays shooting accuracy for movement, crouching and jetpack use.

Space Engineers 2 is in early access on PC via Steam at the standard price of 4,700 yen. The game is a sandbox simulation set in space where players design and operate ground vehicles, spaceships and bases.
