Free browser game TANKEN INFINITY RIDE turns pedaling into roguelike dungeon runs

The GitHub Pages title connects to a smart trainer via Web Bluetooth, with cadence setting the music tempo and enemy thresholds.

The browser game TANKEN INFINITY RIDE is playable for free via GitHub Pages, and its source code is published on GitHub, according to gamebusiness.jp. The title combines a roguelike dungeon crawl with a road bike connected to a smart trainer.

Using Web Bluetooth, the game reads the player's pedaling power and cadence to drive a character through a dungeon. Cadence also sets the music tempo: 90 rpm produces 90 bpm, while stopping the pedals leaves only a slowing drum. Enemies have defensive cadence thresholds, with a mouse defending at 60 rpm and a dragon at 95 rpm. Trainer resistance rises with the enemy's weight, adding a 2% grade for a mouse and 10% for a dragon.

The game uses three.js for 3D graphics, with a default first-person view showing handlebars and front wheel. Players can switch to third-person or top-down 2D views. Four musical styles are selectable: Japanese, strings, organ and EDM. Narration uses the browser's Web Speech function, with a reading dictionary that converts kanji to hiragana before speech to avoid Windows misreadings.

Those without a trainer can try the game using power and cadence sliders. One tile in the game equals 4 meters of riding distance.

Background

The developer previously built an indoor bike app that uses a smart trainer's pedaling speed and power to ride through real cities, initially offering only New York's Broadway and Tokyo's Fuji-kaido. It was later expanded to six courses, including central London to Abbey Road and Tokyo's Ome-kaido from Ogikubo Station to Shinjuku's Oguard-shita, plus two Beatles-heritage routes in Liverpool. The author also created the emoji-based roguelike Tanken Infinity and an infinite music engine that automatically explores to a beat.
