EA Announces Wing Commander 3 30th Anniversary Remaster

EA producer Jim Vessella revealed the remaster at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, built from 600 original FMV tapes found in EA's archive.

Electronic Arts is remastering Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger. EA producer Jim Vessella announced Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger—30th Anniversary Edition during a presentation at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, according to PC Gamer.

The project draws on the game's original full-motion video recordings. Vessella discovered 600 source tapes while digitising EA's video archive, and the remaster will include both the source and upscaled versions of the game's FMVs.

The 30th Anniversary Edition will also include Kilrathi Saga integration, run at 60 FPS, and add controller support. It is set for release on Steam, GOG, and the EA app.

Wing Commander 3 originally launched in 1994 and featured a voice cast including Mark Hamill and John Rhys-Davies. Alongside Wing Commander 4, it is generally regarded as one of the strongest entries in the series.

The announcement comes less than 24 hours after Cloud Imperium Games surprise-released a trailer for Star Citizen's single-player spinoff Squadron 42. In recent years EA has consolidated resources around heavy hitters like Battlefield and EA Sports FC; its Dead Space remake did not sell well enough for the publisher to greenlight the same treatment for the sequel.
