Fortune: Xbox Project Helix Set for 2028 Holiday Launch at $1,200-$1,800

Sources also describe a next-gen Xbox handheld by late next year and a tiered Game Pass overhaul, according to Fortune.

Xbox's next-generation console, known as Project Helix, is planned to launch in the 2028 holiday season with a projected price of between $1,200 and $1,800, according to sources cited by Fortune. The report was published by gamesindustry.biz.

The same sources said deadlines on Project Helix were moved up by at least several months. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has previously said the company is prioritising efficiency and affordability alongside performance for its next-generation console.

Fortune also reported that Xbox plans to launch a next-generation handheld device by late next year, and is preparing a Game Pass overhaul built around a tiered structure with optional add-ons for console-only games, cloud gaming and multiplayer.

Layoffs and questions over Xbox's ownership

According to Fortune, Sharma plans additional layoffs this month, in November and in January. The report also addresses rumours that Xbox could face a sale, a spinoff, outside investment or conversion into a subsidiary.

Microsoft commercial business CEO Judson Althoff said the company would not have put Sharma on a business it intends to sell. As of July 2026, Xbox Game Pass subscribers totaled less than 50% of the original target, and Sharma has previously said the company had bet on Game Pass, multi-platform releases and a broader portfolio of content.
