Yuji Horii Releases Free AI-Made Mystery Game '取調室の小宮'

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii shared a browser-based interrogation adventure built with AI, saying it took him about 30 minutes to make.

Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, released a free mystery adventure game titled '取調室の小宮' on October 11, 2026, sharing the link on his X account, according to inven.co.kr. The game runs directly in a browser and is hosted as an Anthropic Claude Artifact link.

Horii said the game took about 30 minutes to make. In '取調室の小宮', the player interrogates Komiya, a 72-year-old former locksmith suspected in a pawnshop safe heist.

Komiya has agitation and resistance meters. If his resistance reaches 100, he invokes his right to silence and the interrogation is blocked. The clear rating depends on how many of his lies the player exposes.

Earlier detective work

Horii has recalled that when he made The Portopia Serial Murder Case on an old PC, he handled the story, art and programming alone. That game was designed by Horii and released by Enix in 1983, and is considered an early landmark of Japanese adventure games. In April 2023, Square Enix released 'Square Enix AI Tech Preview: The Portopia Serial Murder Case' for free on Steam with natural-language-processing AI features, though it fell short of expectations due to ethical restrictions and low polish.

A separate remake of the original was announced in September and is set to release in 2027 on Switch 2, Switch and PC (Steam), with Horii as general director and a greatly expanded new story.
