Sweden Picks 'Adult Supervision' as Oscar Entry After Zurich Debut

Alex Schulman's debut feature Adult Supervision has been selected as Sweden's official submission for best international feature at the Academy Awards, following its premiere at the Zurich Film Festival this week.

The film marks Schulman's first turn in the director's chair for a narrative feature, and the dual news of its Zurich bow and Oscar selection positions it as one of the year's notable international contenders.

Schulman's path to Adult Supervision runs through the theater. In 2022, he wrote and directed the monologic stage show Comfort Reports at Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre, a production that became known as much for its offstage story as its onstage one: it was there that Schulman and actor Gustaf Skarsgård reconciled after a years-long public feud.

That conflict had played out publicly after Schulman mocked Skarsgård on the Alex & Sigges podcast. Their rapprochement at the Royal Dramatic Theatre preceded Schulman's move into feature filmmaking with Adult Supervision.

Sweden's selection means the film will now enter the Academy's international feature race, with the Zurich premiere serving as its first major festival showcase.
