The screenplay version included in the volume is the fourth draft, the one the studio greenlit for production.
Earlier drafts differed
Zemeckis and Gale got over two dozen rejections before the Back to the Future script was picked up. Universal put the film into pre-production before the time machine was changed from a refrigerator to the DeLorean.
In the first two drafts, the 1985 Marty returns to was a slightly altered future. The original ending featured a nuclear test sequence instead of the clock tower sequence, changed for budgetary reasons.
Filming began with Eric Stoltz playing Marty McFly before Michael J. Fox was cast.
