BBC Studios Unveils Two Scripted Labels, Digital Spin-Off Plan
BBC Studios scripted chief Jamie Hall launched Landed Productions and CliffEdge Entertainment and outlined a strategy favoring smaller talent deals over buying production companies.
BBC Studios Scripted managing director Jamie Hall has unveiled two new production labels and plans for a third focused on digital spin-offs, setting out a strategy built on smaller, more regular deals with talent and independent labels rather than large production company acquisitions.
The first label, Bristol-based Landed Productions, is led by Jenny Van Der Lande and is BBC Studios' first scripted label outside London. The second, CliffEdge Entertainment, is led by Deborah Sathe. A third, as-yet-unnamed label focused on digital spin-offs of existing brands will be led by Katy Karger.
Hall's approach marks a shift from the acquisition-led model that has shaped much of the UK production sector, where BBC Studios already owns majority stakes in producers including Clerkenwell Films, House Productions, Lookout Point and Baby Cow.
Hall joined BBC Studios earlier this year from Vice Studios/Pulse Films, where he oversaw shows including Gangs Of London. BBC Studios has also struck talent tie-ups with Jamie Demetriou, Tom Basden, Nick Mohammed and Diane Morgan.
BBC Studios Productions chief Zai Bennett wants to invest in around two to three new talent labels per year. The strategy comes amid wider movement in the UK scripted market, including the recent departure of Joel Wilson as co-founder of Sex Education producer Eleven.
