Blade Runner 2099 Goes 'Sunshine Noir', Debuts on Prime Video November 25
Showrunner Silka Luisa says the eight-episode series moves the replicant story into a hot, chaotic Los Angeles when it launches on Prime Video.
Blade Runner 2099 will launch on Prime Video on November 25 as an eight-episode series set in a "sunshine noir" Los Angeles, showrunner Silka Luisa revealed, according to joblo.com. In her description, the city is hot, sticky and chaotic as it comes back to life.
The setting marks a shift from the rain-soaked streets associated with the franchise. The story this time has replicants at the top: they have taken over, and humanity has been reduced to second-class status.
Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who disguises herself as a replicant to infiltrate the LAPD. Her path crosses that of Olwen, played by Michelle Yeoh, a replicant nearing the end of her lifespan who partners with Cora to hunt down a runaway hiding a secret that could collapse the fragile city.
Yeoh said replicants now have a much longer lifespan and are stronger and faster, which is why they won the war.
A franchise built on shifting decades
Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, was set in the then-far-future year 2019. Denis Villeneuve's sequel Blade Runner 2049 moved the story forward to 2049.
At San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, Luisa said she often found herself rooting for the replicants rather than the humans and wanted to explore them more.
