Blade Runner: The Final Cut Is Free on YouTube
Ridley Scott's definitive 2007 cut of Blade Runner is now streaming for free on YouTube, giving viewers the five-cut saga's most polished version.
Blade Runner: The Final Cut, the 2007 version of Ridley Scott's sci-fi landmark, is now streaming for free on YouTube. It marks the fifth official cut of a film that has been reworked repeatedly since its original release.
Scott directed the film, which stars Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a retired police officer and bounty hunter tasked with tracking down fugitive replicants in a Los Angeles of November 2019. The Tyrell Corporation, which designs the replicants, operates from a pyramid in the city; the replicants themselves have a four-year lifespan.
The film's legacy was hardly assured at first. Blade Runner was not a box office success and drew mixed reviews upon release, and Scott has said screenwriter Hampton Fancher was furious about the finished film. Ford and Scott also clashed over the meaning of the film's origami motif.
Its influence has since spread widely. William Gibson's novel Neuromancer arrived two years after Blade Runner, and the Night City of Cyberpunk 2077 is based on Scott's depiction of Los Angeles in 2019. Polygon noted the free stream.
Five cuts, one classic
With five different cuts released over the years, The Final Cut stands as the version Scott has most closely endorsed. Its free availability on YouTube now puts that cut within reach of anyone curious about the film's long afterlife.
