Giacchino composed the score using microphones from the 1920s and 1930s at Abbey Road with an 80-piece orchestra. Kimbra wrote and produced all original songs for the Venus Nova character.

Ray Gunn is described as a 35-year passion project for Bird. Financing failed to materialize long ago and the project was shelved. During the years it lay dormant, Bird made The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille.
