At New York Comic Con 2026, Josh Brolin told Polygon he does not know if Thanos could defeat Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, but is excited to see him in the role.
Josh Brolin said he does not know whether Thanos could defeat Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, in an interview with Polygon at New York Comic Con 2026 on October 14, 2026.
Brolin, who played Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, said he likes the idea of any confrontation with Downey and that he loves that Downey is taking on the role. He added that he cannot wait to see Downey as Doctor Doom.
Downey is set to portray Victor von Doom, the character's civilian name, in the upcoming Avengers films. Marvel Studios has not confirmed whether Brolin will return as Thanos in any upcoming film.
Comic book history and release dates
In Marvel Comics' 2015 Secret Wars storyline, Doom gains the Beyonders' powers and rules Battleworld as God Emperor Doom; when Thanos challenges his authority, Doom kills him by tearing out his spine and skull. Some MCU fans think Brolin's Thanos will show up in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027.
