Clayface Featurette Details 27-Stage Makeup Transformation
DC Studios released a behind-the-scenes look at Matt Hagen's transformation, and a Japan-originated visual will be a limited poster gift.
DC Studios has released a featurette titled "Special Makeup & VFX Edition" for its film Clayface, showing how the character Matt Hagen transforms on screen, according to cinematoday.jp. The featurette details 18 stages of practical makeup and 27 total stages once visual effects are included.
On set, daily makeup application took 2 to 4 hours, the featurette shows. The build included special contact lenses and a mouthpiece designed to alter the character's vocalization.
Director James Watkins said the design avoided the overt monster looks typical of comic-book villains and was instead based on real medicine and dermatology. He said VFX were used to complement and extend the practical makeup rather than override it.
Separately, a visual originating in Japan has been officially adopted as one of the film's worldwide official visuals. It will be distributed as an A3 poster as a limited gift for theatergoers.
At the world premiere in Los Angeles on October 13 local time, lead actor Tom Rhys Harries commented on the visual and on Japan. The film's Japan release is set for October 30.
Earlier context
