CoSA VFX Releases Lanterns Season 1 VFX Featurette

The video shows how the team recreated Rushville, Nebraska, replacing California backgrounds and adding digital dust and bullet hits.

CoSA VFX has released a behind-the-scenes featurette detailing the hidden visual effects work created for Season 1 of Lanterns, according to comingsoon.net. The video features VFX Producer Eddie Bonin and CoSA VFX Supervisor Christopher Lance explaining the digital pipeline used on the series.

Lanterns was largely shot on location in California, and the VFX team replaced backgrounds to recreate the fictional rural landscapes of Rushville, Nebraska. The team simulated dust clouds and bullet hits, and removed Los Angeles trees and mountains to match the plates.

Artists in the featurette also discussed depicting John Stewart at different ages, using scans of Pierre's face to add hair growth during his extended mission.

Season 1 of Lanterns concluded on October 4. HBO has not yet renewed the series for a second season.

Production context

Lanterns has previously drawn attention as one of HBO's most expensive productions, with a $160 million budget. In earlier comments, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran told Collider that a second season would depend on finding a worthy successor to the first season, while recent reports suggested a writers' room is working on potential future storylines.
