Criterion Announces 'The Complete Kubrick' 4K Set With Rare 'The Shining' Cut
The Criterion Collection's 4K Ultra HD box set includes a 4K restoration of The Shining and its 115-minute international cut, a first for North American collectors.
The Criterion Collection has announced a 4K Ultra HD box set titled The Complete Kubrick, which includes The Shining with a 4K digital restoration, its original theatrical mono audio and a remastered 5.1 surround sound mix, according to movieweb.com.
The set also includes the rare 115-minute international cut of The Shining. According to the announcement, this marks the first time North American collectors can own the international cut alongside the US cut.
The Shining was adapted from Stephen King's novel and directed by Stanley Kubrick, released in 1980. It follows Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and their son Danny (Danny Lloyd) at the Overlook Hotel. Kubrick's film diverged radically from King's source material, which infuriated King, and the director's treatment of the cast during production was controversial. The international cut was trimmed by nearly half an hour shortly after its initial American theatrical run.
The box set also features new bonus material, including an audio commentary with filmmaker Lee Unkrich and author Michael Benson, and a conversation with novelist Jonathan Lethem and film historian Kevin Wynter. It also includes Jan Harlan's documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures, narrated by Tom Cruise, and Vivian Kubrick's Making "The Shining". An essay is contributed by author and critic Nat.
