Brindley is currently CEO of Twofour, the producer behind Destination X. Katz leaves the broadcaster this month as its longest-serving Chief Content Officer.
Brindley previously worked for Channel 4 and was behind Educating Yorkshire, which he recently revived at Twofour. He reached the final four for the top BBC content job last year.
Stuart Murphy was among the final two candidates for the Channel 4 role. Murphy launched BBC Three in 2003 and was Sky's Director of Entertainment Channels between 2015 and 2018, before becoming CEO of the English National Opera in 2018, a role he held for five years. Other candidates included Dan McGolpin, Fozia Khan and Tanya Shaw.

Channel 4 is laying off around 340 staff, its biggest round of cuts in its 40-year history, with around 50% of commissioning roles set to be reduced.
Brindley will report to new CEO Priya Dogra, as will Louisa Compton and Kiran Nataraja.
