DC Studios says Swamp Thing script is in progress

Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, said the screenplay for the Swamp Thing film is being written now, according to joblo.com. He described the project as something DC Studios is excited about.

Safran added that although the script is in progress, the studio must wait for a filmmaker's availability window. No production start date has been established, and DC Studios has not announced when the movie might reach theatres.

James Mangold is attached to write and direct Swamp Thing. In October 2025, the project was announced as part of Gods and Monsters, the first chapter of the new DC Universe being built by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Mangold said four years ago that he was working on the script, and he has described his vision as a standalone horror movie rather than one connecting extensively with the wider DC Universe. He has also said he had been thinking about making a kind of Frankenstein movie for years, and that he contacted Gunn and Safran about Swamp Thing when he learned they were taking charge of DC's film and television adaptations at Warner Bros.

Swamp Thing has appeared on screen before. Wes Craven directed a 1982 feature film, followed by Jim Wynorski's The Return of Swamp Thing in 1989. A live-action series produced by James Wan's Atomic Monster premiered in 2019.
