Denver Comedy Works is marking the 45th anniversary of its original downtown location at Larimer Square, a milestone for a club that has become a fixture of the city's comedy scene.
The club's history stretches beyond that single room. A second Comedy Works location opened in South Denver in 2008, and the two venues together average 7,500 ticket purchases per month.
Wende Curtis has been part of that run for 40 of the club's 45 years. She started at Comedy Works' former Fort Collins location as a cocktail waitress in 1986 while studying theatre at Colorado State University. She became general manager of the downtown Denver club in 1993, co-owner in 2001, and later bought out her partners to take full control.
Comedy Works has also held a firm line on phones in its rooms. The club has used Yondr bags to lock away devices since Dave Chappelle performed downtown in April 2016.
The anniversary arrives as the club continues to book comedians including Jeff Arcuri, Jeffrey Keller, Sam Tallent and Tom Segura, according to Deadline.
