EA shuts down BioWare and cancels new Mass Effect game

Amazon's live-action Mass Effect series at Amazon MGM Studios will still move forward, with its attached creatives remaining on board.

Electronic Arts has shut down BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, and canceled the fifth Mass Effect game that was in development, according to Kotaku. The closure was confirmed on October 21, 2026.

The cancellation removes the next mainline entry in the sci-fi franchise, which had been in the works at the studio.

Amazon, meanwhile, intends to move forward with its live-action Mass Effect series at Amazon MGM Studios, and all creatives attached to the project remain on board. The shutdown of the game studio does not change those plans.

The series is set after the original trilogy starring Commander Shepard. On N7 Day in 2025, BioWare said the games were meant to capture the player's story and that story shouldn't be retold without the player, confirming the show would take place after those events.
